In Palestine, the primary language spoken is Arabic, specifically the Palestinian dialect, which is closely related to the Levantine dialect, also known as Shami Arabic. Although it can seem tricky to learn, the millions of speakers worldwide make learning Arabic a worthwhile endeavor. Fortunately, learning is made easier by the linguistic immersion students will experience while living in Palestine.

Variety of Arabic Dialects Offered

Study Levantine Arabic is delighted to offer courses that teach a wide selection of Ammiyya Arabic dialects. Whether you want to learn or improve your Arabic for work, business, travel, or religious reasons, our Arabic courses will accommodate your language goals.

Since Arabic dialects can differ significantly, we recommend carefully choosing a dialect to study, particularly for first-time learners. For absolute beginners, we generally recommend Modern Standard Arabic or Levantine Arabic, a dialect that is widely understood in many Arabic-speaking countries.

Here is a complete list of the dialects we offer in our Arabic Winter Immersion Course in Palestine:

●  Colloquial Palestinian Arabic (Ammiyya Arabic)

●  Shami or Levantine Arabic (Ammiya dialect)

The Arabic Language

With approximately 376 million speakers worldwide, the Arabic language is found in diverse geographic and cultural regions. Found in a vast geographic area, although many speakers are located in the Middle East and North Africa, there are around 25 distinct Arabic dialects. Because these dialects can vary significantly, selecting a specific dialect to learn is crucial when deciding to learn Arabic.

If you are unsure of which dialect you would like to speak, think about which region you would like to engage with, study, or visit. Since dialects within a confined region, like the Levant region or the Gulf region, tend to be mutually understandable, choosing to learn a dialect from the region you’d like to engage with is often sufficient for communication.

If you’re still unsure of which dialect to pursue, the Modern Standard Dialect is also an option. Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), also known as Fushā, is a dialect understood in all Arabic-speaking countries. However, the dialect itself is not spoken in daily life. Instead, MSA is used in formal written communication such as literary or journalistic works. Because this dialect can be more challenging to learn, unless you have a specific goal to read literature or formal language, we recommend learning a spoken dialect.

Arabic Dialects To Study

In our Winter Arabic programs, we are delighted to provide a wide selection of Arabic dialects. Whether you’re learning Arabic for work, travel, religion, or any other reason, our programs can accommodate your language goals.

Given the diversity of Arabic, careful thought should be given to choosing the dialect you’d like to learn. For beginners and absolute beginners, we generally recommend Modern Standard Arabic or Levantine Arabic for their versatility.

Here is a full list of the dialects we offer in the Winter Immersion Course in Palestine:

●  Modern Standard Arabic (MSA)

●  Classical Arabic (Fusha Arabic – formal literary Arabic)

●  Colloquial Arabic

●  The Palestinian spoken dialect

●  Shami or Levantine Arabic (Ammiya dialect)

●  A mixed program (MSA, Levantine Arabic, and Colloquial Palestinian Arabic)

Non-Intensive, Intensive, and Winter Immersion Course in Palestine?

All Winter Arabic Courses come in three intensity levels. Regardless of whether you’re a beginning or advanced learner, you can choose from a non-intensive, intensive, or super-intensive course. The course intensity determines the frequency of classes, as well as their level of immersion and out-of-classroom coursework.

1. Non-Intensive Arabic Course

Most relaxed intensity available, meeting for a total of 12 lesson hours (45 minutes per lesson hour) per week, ~ about 3 hours of Arabic courses a day for 3 days a week. This intensity is designed to provide students with ample in-classroom immersion while also allowing them plenty of time to explore the city of Hebron, Palestine. We recommend that students interested in a long-term program (anywhere from 1 – 3 months) enroll in a non-intensive Arabic course.

2. Intensive Arabic Course

Designed to further immerse students in the Arabic language and culture, these courses consist of 20 instructional hours a week. This works out to be about 4 teaching hours of Arabic language instruction per day, 5 days a week. Intensive Arabic courses will have additional homework and out-of-classroom assignments.

3. Super-Intensive Arabic Course

Designed for students who seek a comprehensive, immersive, and high-intensity classroom experience. Courses will include 30 lesson hours of language instruction per week, with 5 hours of language instruction per day, 5 days a week.  Due to the demanding schedule, we recommend Super-Intensive courses for those enrolled in shorter programs (1–4 weeks).
